working with homeless people

Working with homeless and ex-homeless people is at the core of Cardboard Citizens' work.

Cardboard Citizens has acquired an unparalleled expertise in bringing theatre and performing arts to excluded people, including refugees and asylum-seekers.

The company has achieved a hard-won and distinctive aesthetic, drawing on the experiences of its contributors and the nature of its performance environments to forge an accessible and yet challenging theatrical language.

Our work with homeless people includes, Peer Forum Theatre, the Hostel Tour and Performing Arts Workshops. Many of our participants then move through the company to engage with the Professional Training and Professional Theatre aspects of our work.

Cardboard Citizens:

1) Marries the creation of high quality, innovative and interactive theatre with social objectives.

2) Acts as an ambassador for the arts in the social sector.

3) Provides an exemplar of best practice for arts organisations wishing to work with socially excluded groups.

4) Brings together audiences both with and without experience of homelessness to challenge perceptions and effect changes.

5) Develops homeless people as professional artists and professional artists as people through the range of experiences it offers.
